Obituary for Michael Laurence Slagle

Mike Slagle passed away on January 16, 2019, after a lengthy bout with cancer.

Mike was the eldest of six children of John and Eleanor Slagle. He was born in Huntington, Indiana, on November 19, 1945. Mike attended Central Junior High and Reno High School, graduating in 1964. He attended UNR, and played football in both the old & new Mackey Stadiums. Mike graduated in 1968 with a BS degree in Secondary Education, majoring in biology with minors in chemistry & PE.

On Oct. 25, 1968, Mike was commissioned as Ensign, USNR at the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School (OCS), Newport R.I. He volunteered and completed Basic Underwater Demolition/Seal (BUDS) Training, Class 50, at the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, Ca., May 9, 1969. Mike was a member of the Apollo 14 command module recovery team. He was the leader of Swim Team #2 (backup), on board the U.S.S. New Orleans, LPH-11. In 2005 Mike retired at the rank of Captain, USNR.

Mike subsequently taught math/science and coached football at Carson City and Reno High Schools. He retired from full time teaching in 2004. Mike is survived by his wife Sinda of 39 years; sons Matthew and Thomas (Heather); siblings, Cindy, Dave, Steve and Vince Slagle and Terri Slagle Watters.

The memorial for Mike will be at Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Avenue, Reno at 11:00 on Wednesday, January 23.

Mike lived an interesting and an enjoyable life…..HooYah!
