Obituary for John Richard Boyne

John was a third generation Nevada. John was born May 10, 1947 at St Mary’s Hospital, the only child of the late Albert B. Boyne and Elva June vande Bogart. John, a native Renoite attended Anderson Elementary School, Billinghurst Middle School, and Reno High School graduating in 1965. After one semester at the University of Nevada, John joined the US Army. John received an honorable discharge in November 1968 and spent 4 years In the Army Reserves.
Upon returning to Reno John worked for Weinstocks. He always said talking to the UPS delivery driver one day about the pay differences gave him inspiration; John quit Weinstocks. John went to work for United Parcel Service for 33 years. John was Honorably Retired in 2003 from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. John was proud of his 25 years of safe driving and Gold Coat awarded to him.
John met his wife, Katharine (Kathy) Reil Marcolini Boyne. Kathy, a teacher, was waiting tables at the Shy Clown (now Baldini’s) coffee shop graveyard shift during the summer; John was working nights at UPS and ate his dinner at the Shy Clown. A year and a half later they were married at the Silver Queen Wedding Chapel in Virginia City on November 1, 1975. John is survived by his wife, her siblings and their families, David Reil of Reno, Margaret & Jim Perazzo of Fallon, NV, & Kenneth Reil of Albuquerque, NM.
John was a charter member of the Truckee Meadows Darting League in Reno. TMDL was a steel tip dart league. John volunteered and was selected to be the Regional Director for the American Darts Organization (ADO). He was a supporting member of TMDL for over 20 years until the sport was up-staged by soft tip darts. John continued to play darts in soft tip leagues.
John and Kathy joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1997. After his retiring from UPS John became active in the operational side becoming coxswain and patrolling Lake Tahoe through 2019. John earned boat crew / coxswain rating, IT- Instructor, VE – vessel examiner and radio operator. John stood watch at boat shows, safety fairs, VE Days. John taught Public Education classes at Cabela’s and member training. John was elected to Flotilla 11-03 Vice Commander, Flotilla 11-03 Commander, Division 11-N-11 Vice Commander & Division 11-N-11 Commander. John was a 22yr member when he passed over the bar.
John was a member of Snowshoe Thompson Chapter # 1827 of E Clampus Vitus since 1972. He was Humbug of the chapter in 1987. John very much enjoyed the organization and the members he met and the history he traveled through. John completed his photo/plaque binder last year. John joined the American Legion Reno, NV Post #1. He joined and became active in Vietnam Veterans of America #989. John was invited and joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 523 in Virginia City, NV. John and Kathy are members of the Nevada Historical Society and the Nevada Museum of Art. John & Kathy joined the Reno Gem & Mineral Society in 2018. John was an active member of the Reno High School Reunion Committee Class of 1965.
John loved to fish be it fly fishing with high school friends or bass fishing with Kathy. He loved the out-of-doors. John would be climbing the hills to the ridges to take photos and see what was on the other side on RGMS Field Trips. John liked to take the travel trailer and visit the National, State, and Local Parks, visiting Museums, Interpretive Centers or on Trash Treks.
