Obituary for Helene Louise Greenwood Harks

Helene lived a good long life and is sadly missed by her five surviving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other surviving relatives and friends. Throughout her whole life she carried a deep love for her children which gave them the strength to move forward. She left this world in a peaceful state of mind. Helene was a tough independent woman, a speech and drama teacher for many years, a producer of musicals for Diablo Light Opera in Walnut Creek, California, lighting director, Smithsonian museum docent, dog and animal lover, but mostly a caring mother. She loved to read books, especially thrillers which kept her mind active up until her final days. Her outgoing personality helped her make friends easily. She had traveled oversees, loved Italy the best where she spent a year teaching.

Helene grew up in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, lived in San Diego, California, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and moved to Livermore, California, in 1960 along with her husband and five young children where they were raised and educated. Her surviving children are Pam Bailey, Mary Buckley, Christine Wallace, Bill Harks, and Jeannette Grant. Her grandchildren are Dan Walker, Scott Walker, Megan Dory, Kevin Grant, Jordan, Kristen, and Matthew Harks. Her great-grandchildren are Elisabeth, Logan, Dean, Ester, Penelope, Isabelle, and Ella.

A divorce devastated Helene yet strengthened her in important ways. She moved to Danville, California, and resided there for over forty years. Helene outlived her two brothers and sister whom she loved dearly. She surrounded herself with friends in the theater scene and always kept active. She was a cancer survivor before moving to Reno, Nevada, where she spent her last year closer to family. All of her children saw to it that the last stages of her life were as comfortable as possible and that she was not alone. She was a good person who lived a good life which was sadly shortened by a second bout of cancer. Helene died peacefully surrounded by family.

A memorial service will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery at 435 Stoker Ave, Reno Nevada, October 11th at 11:00 AM with a complimentary lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers we kindly ask that you consider donating to a charity like the Nevada Humane Society
