Obituary for Daniel (Dan) Orlich

Daniel (Dan) Orlich, WWII Marine Veteran, Former Green Bay Packer, Champion Trap shooter, Beloved Father, Grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Reno, NV. He was 94.
Dan was born in Chisholm, MN to Serbian parents. He grew up playing sports and working in his father’s grocery store. After graduating from Chisholm High School, he initially attended Northwestern University and Penn State on a football scholarship. He interrupted his education to serve as an Officer in the Marine Corps at the end of WWII. After the War, he came out west to Reno, NV to finish his athletic eligibility at The University of Nevada-Reno, where he played football on the successful teams of the late 40’s. He also played basketball and participated in track. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was then drafted by the Green Bay Packers, where he played 3 seasons, including Curly Lambeau’s last season as head coach. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living former Green Bay Packer. After leaving Green Bay, he returned to Reno to work for Harold’s Club. This association and the Trap Club they had opened, led him to pick up the sport of Trapshooting. Turns out he was pretty good! From the late 50’s to the early 70’s, he set and broke records, many of which remain today. Dan retired from a long career in gaming in 1987. He continued to be an active member of the shooting community, the Harold’s Club Pioneers, the Elks Club and the Prospector’s Club. Amongst his many accomplishments, he was indicted into the UNR Hall of Fame in 1974, the Reno Tahoe Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992 and the American Trapshooting Association Hall of Fame in 1979.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Dora Orlich, sister Eugenia Hartig, and brothers Michael Orlich and Sam Orlich, Jr.
He is survived by his sister, Euphemia Zahringer, daughters Dori Orlich and Dana Orlich McGwire, son Simo Orlich, granddaughters Morgan, Mallory and Gracen McGwire, numerous nieces and nephews, and many beloved friends.
